Apple has updated its App Store age rating system to introduce more granular categories and enhance child safety. If you're developing or publishing apps, these changes are crucial to understand (and act on) before they impact your submissions. Find out what questions you need to answer in order to set up an app age rating.
New Age Categories the App Store: 13+, 16+, and 18+
Apple has added three new age tiers: 13+, 16+, and 18+ to the longstanding 4+ and 9+ options to replace older categories like 12+ and 17+. These changes are already rolling out in the latest iOS 26 beta and other platforms.
Mandatory Questionnaire for All Apps
Developers now must complete an updated age-rating questionnaire in App Store Connect. The new set of required questions covers in-app controls, feature capabilities, medical or wellness content, and violent themes helping Apple more accurately assign age ratings.
Complete the Age Ratings Questionnaire: A Step-by-Step Guide
To help you prepare, here's a preview of the questionnaire and instructions on how to complete it:
Navigate to App Store Connect and select the relevant app.
Go to "App Information", scroll to the "Age Ratings” section, and click "Set Up Age Ratings" or if you already did that click on "Edit".

You will then answer questions in 7 steps and provide additional information. Each step is detailed below.
Step 1: Features

Step 2: Mature Themes

Step 3: Medical or Wellness

Step 4: Sexuality or Nudity

Step 5: Violence

Step 6: Chance-Based Activities

Step 7: Additional information
Once you receive the calculated rating, you have the option to override it with a higher age rating if necessary.
If your app’s Terms of Use require a higher minimum age than Apple’s calculated rating, you can use the “Override to Higher Age Rating” option in App Store Connect. The new rating will appear globally, with regional customizations applied where necessary.

Final age ratings
Your app's age ratings will be updated based on the information provided, and you can view the details in the "Age ratings" section, as shown below.

Key Deadline: January 31, 2026
Apple requires all developers to respond to these updated age-rating questions by January 31, 2026. Failure to comply will block app update submissions in App Store Connect.
